To choose to eat more local and
regional foods constitutes a choice
to eat seasonally.
In Iowa, the rich soils and optimal growing climate foster a diversity of fruits, berries, oils and sweeteners, nuts, grains, legumes, leafy greens, other vegetables, flavors, squashes, root vegetables, meats, poultry, eggs, and dairy.
The availability of fresh foods is always subject to variable factors such as temperature, rainfall, and individual growing practices (for example, using a greenhouse to extend the growing season); therefore, this calendar charts the estimated periods of availability in our locale. According to Iowa State University Extension, seasons may be about a week earlier in southern Iowa and a week later in northern Iowa than they are here in central Iowa. The availability of foods beyond their harvest seasons (such as stored crops or frozen poultry) is denoted by parentheses and lighter colors.
In addition to the seasonal yields outlined in this calendar, we have a number of value-added food products available to us throughout much of the year. Look for local baked goods, beer, breads, cereals, flours, ice cream, jams, jellies, mustards, pastas, pickles, salsas, sauces, tofu, yogurts, wines, and more.
Enjoy.
